Story of "FAITH" (Waffle)
In March of 2010 spring was around the corner along with new beginnings. I was overcoming all of the emotional, mental, and physical pain after a bizarre accident in January that caused me to break ribs and then the loss of two of our precious 4-legged family members (all within one week). God was showing me life again. He led us to a new life and a new family member, “Waffle”, who I would prefer to call “Faith.” As God brought her into the picture, I still struggled terribly with the loss of “India” and “Whipper.” One Saturday, God led me to the beach as I had some time alone. As I walked toward the beach, I prayed and cried out for God to show me a sign that this new horse and all that I am doing is really His will. I asked Him to show me a starfish. Boy was I in for an awakening! As I approached the beach I stood in awe as there were literally hundreds of starfish covering the shores of Isle of Palms. He also led me to one that naturally had 4 legs (a cross). God has never spoken so clearly as that day. “Okay, God, I surrender. These really ARE your plans.”
As we traveled to Alpharetta, GA to see “Waffle” (aka FAITH), I began to doubt the plans again. “Is this too soon, Father?” Upon my doubts my husband, Tom, kept the faith about this trip and new “child.” After spending the afternoon with FAITH, we discussed decisions about her on our way to find a hotel for the night. I still had doubts in my head, but Tom continued to “keep the faith”. As we stood at the check-in desk, guess what was right in front of me? What else, but a brochure with a beach and starfish right in front of my eyes. “Okay, God! I hear you. We will take and keep FAITH.”
Since “Waffle’s” arrival to Blissful Dreams, we have seen FAITH work in so many ways. It’s so difficult to truly describe how she continues to touch different lives in different ways each day. You have to witness it in person it to get the full effect. We have seen countless children and adults with low self-esteem and confidence gain as much confidence as David in the Bible story of David and Goliath in a short hour of time with her. You can imagine how intimidating it can be for someone who has never seen a horse in person before to get introduced to a 17.0+ Hand Belgian Draft horse (for those of you who aren’t familiar with horses, just picture one of the Budweiser Draft horses on TV) for the first time. I will never forget a class of teenagers that came to Blissful, and how she touched a couple of them. Most, if not all of the class, had never seen a horse before, much less, a giant like her. At first sight, many wouldn’t come near her. Then as she walked toward them giving them her soft, gentle kisses they slowly let their guard down. They realized she was much like them. Big and tough on the outside, but really gentle at heart and someone that just wants to feel loved. One of the bigger boys of the group was terrified to be near, much less get on her back. After “Waffle” and our Blissful “Dream Team” slowly earned his trust, we were able to get him up on her back. Nervous at first he held on tight and white knuckled. He felt he was no longer in control. As we started slowly walking and talking, he soon forgot about his fear of this gentle giant and he left all of his other personal fears behind. He was even able to let go of his death grip to shoot a basketball into our “horse friendly” basketball net back on our trail. He was finally on top of the world and had a feeling that he could defeat anything in his way. All the other students, that typically made fun of him, were finally envying him for getting to ride the horse that they had begun calling “H-2,” short for “The Hummer.” “H-2 “was everyone’s top choice. Funny how a big, intimidating “beast” suddenly turns into every boys’ dream SUV. As our new friend left with his class that day, he shouted “I can’t wait to come back to ride again. Sign me up!” Just for a few moments, a broken child was able to leave his hurts and worries behind and he rode on FAITH that day. A FAITH in which gave him confidence like no other. “Waffle” continues to touch many others like this, especially those from broken and abused families. I have many, many other touching stories that I could share about Waffle and all of our other gifts from God at our barn. I continue to learn more and more about true faith through watching they work in other’s lives, as well as my own life.
Despite all of my past sorrows and pain, God is with me and gives me FAITH, hope, love, and life through His precious Son and our one and only Savior Jesus Christ! He shows this unconditional love and grace to me each day through my Blissful Dreams family. Always remember to keep your FAITH!!!
“Praise God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! The Father is a merciful God, who always gives us comfort. He comforts us when we are in trouble. We share in the terrible sufferings of Christ, but also in the wonderful comfort He gives. We suffer in the hope that you will be comforted, as you patiently endure suffering like ours. You never disappoint us. You suffer as much as we did, and we know that you will be comforted as we were….. Our sufferings were so horrible and so unbearable that death seemed certain. In fact, we felt sure that we were going to die. But this made us stop trusting in ourselves and start trusting God, who raises the dead to life. God saved us from the threat of our death and we are sure that He will do it again and again. “2 Corinthians 1:3-10
